A hemoglobin A1c test is a blood test used to measure the amount of protein in red blood cells that helps carry oxygen to the organs and tissues. The test is used to diagnose or prevent conditions that may result from a low red blood cell count (anemia) or high red blood cell count (polycythemia). This test can only be added on to an office visit and cannot be done on its own.
